The CT side is about holding angles, trading map control for information, and punishing aggression. The best CT weapons are the ones that let you do that - not just the ones with the highest damage. Here is what to buy and when.

The Core: M4A4 or M4A1-S

Your default full-buy rifle is the M4. Which version depends on your style, and the trade-offs are covered in M4A4 vs M4A1-S:

  • M4A1-S: silenced, more accurate, tighter spray, but a smaller magazine. Great for holding precise angles and quiet lurk-catching.
  • M4A4: louder, bigger magazine, better for spraying through smokes and holding busy chokes where you expect volume.

Either way, the M4 is your bread and butter. Buy it on any healthy full-buy round.

The AWP

On the CT side the AWP is arguably stronger than anywhere else. Defensive angles are long and pre-aimed, and a single AWP shot shuts down a push and forces the T side to spend utility. If your economy supports it and you can hold a long angle, the AWP is often the highest-impact CT buy in the game.

The catch: it is expensive and punishing if you die with it. Only pick it up when you can play it safely and get traded.

Scoped Rifles: The AUG

The AUG deserves a special mention on CT. Its scope and strong accuracy make it excellent for holding long angles, and in the right hands it competes with the AWP for value on a rifle budget. It costs more than the M4, so treat it as a situational upgrade when you have the money and a long angle to hold.

Eco and Force Rounds

When you cannot afford a rifle, the CT side has strong cheaper options:

  • Pistols: the P250 is the go-to CT eco pistol - cheap, punchy against light armor, and great for stacking a site.
  • SMGs: the MP9 is a CT favorite on anti-eco and half-buy rounds. It is cheap, accurate, mobile, and its kill reward helps you rebuild economy fast when you expect a rush.
  • Force buys: on a broken economy, cheap rifles like the FAMAS give you a fighting chance without committing your full bank.

Which one depends on the round - see best eco weapons for the full breakdown.

Don't Forget Armor and Utility

A weapon is only part of a CT buy. Armor keeps you alive through the first bullet, and utility - a smoke or molotov to delay a push - often wins more rounds than a marginally better gun. Fit your weapon choice into the wider economy plan rather than always buying the most expensive option.

The Takeaway

On CT, buy the M4 as your default, take the AWP or AUG when the economy and the angle support it, and lean on the P250 and MP9 for eco and anti-eco rounds. The best CT weapon is the one that fits the round - and it is almost always paired with armor and a piece of utility, not bought in isolation.
