Galil and FAMAS - When Cheap Rifles Win
Exact CS2 prices, damage and armor penetration for the Galil AR and FAMAS, plus the force-buy math that makes an $1,800 rifle round beat a save.
The Galil AR costs $1,800. The FAMAS costs $1,950. The AK-47 costs $2,700 and both M4s cost $2,900. That is a $900 gap on T side and a $950 gap on CT, and almost every player underrates it, because they price the gun and forget the round. Across five players the Galil saves $4,500 - full armor for the whole team plus a smoke each, in a round you were otherwise going to sit out.
These are not "worse rifles." They are rifles you can afford one round earlier, and the buy menu decides more of your win rate than your aim does.
What the $900 Actually Costs You
| Galil AR | AK-47 | FAMAS | M4A4 | M4A1-S | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Side | T | T | CT | CT | CT |
| Price | $1,800 | $2,700 | $1,950 | $2,900 | $2,900 |
| Kill reward | $300 | $300 | $300 | $300 | $300 |
| Base damage | 30 | 36 | 30 | 33 | 38 |
| Armor penetration | 77.5% | 77.5% | 70% | 70% | 70% |
| Rate of fire | 666 RPM | 600 RPM | 666 RPM | 666 RPM | 600 RPM |
| Magazine | 35 | 30 | 25 | 30 | 20 |
| Movement speed | 215 u/s | 215 u/s | 220 u/s | 225 u/s | 225 u/s |
| One-taps a helmet | No | Yes, any range | No | No | Close range only |
Note the row that does not move: kill reward is $300 across all five guns. A Galil frag pays exactly what an AK frag pays. You are buying the same income stream for two-thirds of the price. Full list in CS2 weapon prices and kill rewards.
Bullets to Kill, Point Blank
Armor scales incoming rifle damage by the weapon's armor penetration, so the only numbers worth memorizing are the ones after that multiplier.
- Galil: 30 x 77.5% = about 23 per armored chest hit. Five rounds to kill.
- AK-47: 36 x 77.5% = about 28. Four rounds to kill.
- FAMAS: 30 x 70% = 21. Five rounds.
- M4A4: 33 x 70% = about 23. Also five rounds.
Read that last pair again. At close range the FAMAS needs exactly as many armored body shots as the M4A4, at the same 666 RPM, for $950 less. The M4A4's edge over the FAMAS is not time-to-kill up close; it is damage retention over distance and ten extra rounds in the magazine.
The T-side comparison is less flattering but tighter than the price suggests. The Galil's 666 RPM means 0.09 s between rounds, so five hits take 0.36 s. The AK's 600 RPM means 0.10 s, so four hits take 0.30 s. Sixty milliseconds separates them - if every bullet lands. That "if" is where the $900 actually goes, because both budget rifles shed damage and accuracy faster with distance.
Head shots are the real dividing line. A Galil head shot on a helmeted target does roughly 93; the FAMAS does roughly 84. Neither kills. The AK's 112 kills at any range, which is the whole reason the AK-47 vs M4 matchup is asymmetric. So the AK player wins by clicking once and you win by clicking twice - which makes crosshair placement and firing discipline non-negotiable on a force.
The FAMAS Burst, Used Properly
Right-click toggles the FAMAS between full auto and a three-round burst. Two things people get wrong about it.
You cannot cancel a burst. Once the first round leaves, all three are going, and the gun forces a pause before the next one. If the target ducks out of your window after round one, you are still committed. That is why burst mode loses close-range fights it had no business losing.
The three rounds group tighter than three auto rounds. They leave in a faster cadence than the 666 RPM auto rate, so the recoil pattern has less time to walk between them. Fire a burst into a wall, then three auto rounds from the same spot with sv_showimpacts 1 enabled, and compare the groups - the difference is visible, not theoretical.
That makes burst a held-angle tool, not a fighting tool. If you are a CT anchoring a long sightline where you would otherwise be tapping single rounds, a burst puts three rounds inside the window a peeker gives you instead of one. Two chest hits plus a head from one burst kills through a helmet at a range where a single tap would not.
Everywhere else, stay on auto. And know which mode you are in before you take a fight: the 25-round magazine is eight bursts and a spare round, and finding out you are in burst mode during a close-range duel is a lost round.
The Galil's 35 Rounds
The Galil AR carries the largest magazine of any rifle in CS2 - 35 rounds, 90 in reserve. The AK-47, M4A4, AUG and SG 553 all carry 30; the M4A1-S carries 20.
Five extra rounds is one more armored body kill without a reload. On a force buy, where you are frequently fighting two or three armored opponents in sequence with no safe reload window, that is a real edge and it partly pays back the extra bullet the Galil needs per body.
It also moves at 215 u/s, identical to the AK, so nothing about your peek timing changes when you swap down. The FAMAS at 220 u/s is 5 u/s slower than either M4 - marginal, but real on a wide swing.
Which Rounds They Belong In
Not round two. After losing the pistol you are on the first loss tier at $1,400, plus whatever survived your $800 start. Galil ($1,800) plus Kevlar ($650) is $2,450 and you almost certainly cannot reach it. Round two is SMG and armor territory - see best eco weapons.
Round three, after two losses. The second loss tier pays $1,900. That is when Galil plus full armor at $2,800 becomes reachable, and it is the classic budget-rifle round.
Any round where a full buy lands $200 to $600 short. This is the case people miss. With $3,400 you cannot afford AK ($2,700) plus Kevlar and helmet ($1,000) - you are $300 short, so you take the AK with Kevlar only and no utility. For $3,300 you can have a Galil, Kevlar and helmet, a flashbang and a smoke. A complete player beats a slightly better gun almost every time.
The CT version: FAMAS ($1,950) plus armor ($1,000) plus defuse kit ($400) is $3,350. The same loadout with an M4 is $4,300. That $950 is a smoke, two flashbangs and $250 left over.
Force Math Against a Full Save
CS2's loss bonus ladder is $1,400 / $1,900 / $2,400 / $2,900 / $3,400, and the counter moves one step at a time - up on a loss, down on a win. Money caps at $16,000.
Say you are on the second tier, so a loss pays $1,900 next round. Two choices:
- Full save. You enter the next round with $1,900 plus carry-over, and you hand the enemy a free round.
- Galil force that gets into site and plants, then loses. $1,900, plus the $800 every T receives when the bomb was planted on a lost round, plus $300 for each kill anyone got, plus the extra $300 the planter picks up. Two team kills and a plant turns $1,900 into roughly $3,300.
That is the whole argument. A plant converts a lost force into a better economy than a clean save produces, because the $800 plant bonus is money a save can never generate. It also means the force is only correct if you genuinely intend to take space and plant. A Galil buy that dies in three separate 1v1s off spawn is worse than saving by every measure.
Two guardrails. First, if half the team cannot reach $2,800 for rifle plus full armor, do not force - buy SMGs together or save together, because a split buy is the worst of both. Second, winning a forced round drops your loss counter one tier, so your next loss pays $500 less. That is a fine trade for a round win, but it is why back-to-back forces get expensive. The full decision framework is in economy management.
The Buys That Waste Them
Skipping the helmet to afford the rifle. Kevlar alone is $650; Kevlar and helmet is $1,000. Without the helmet, a Galil or FAMAS head shot lands its full 120 and kills you outright. With it, the same shot does 84 to 93 and you survive. The helmet is the single item that turns every budget rifle in the game from a one-tap weapon into a two-tap weapon - see armor and helmet. If the choice is a Galil with full armor or an AK with none, take the Galil.
Buying one Galil while four teammates save. That is not a hero buy, it is an $1,800 donation and a free $300 for whoever kills you.
Buying a budget rifle into an enemy eco. If they are saving, $300 per kill is the worst rate on the menu. An MP9 at $1,250 or a MAC-10 at $1,050 pays $600 per kill - double the income for less money.
Buying one at full-buy money. Past roughly $4,000 there is no argument left: take the AK or M4 and the utility. And if the fight you expect is a long sightline rather than a site take, the SSG 08 at $1,700 is $100 cheaper than a Galil and wins that range outright.
Prices and armor values do move between updates, so check Valve's official CS2 release notes before you rebuild a buy chart around any of this. And once you own the round, the other half of the job is firing correctly for the distance - that is spray, burst or tap, and it matters far more on a Galil than it ever does on an AK.
