If you only learn one map's utility deeply, Mirage is a strong choice. The map appears constantly, the choke points are familiar, and a small set of smokes creates a huge amount of round value.

The important part is not memorizing every flashy lineup on the internet. It is knowing the Mirage smokes that actually shape real rounds.

See Mirage Guide - Master Counter-Strike's Most Iconic Map and Mirage Mid Control for the wider map logic around them.

The Mirage Smokes That Matter Most

If you want the short version, these are the core ones:

  • Window
  • Connector
  • Top Mid
  • Short
  • CT
  • Jungle
  • Stairs
  • Market Window
  • Market Door
  • A Ramp
  • Palace
  • B Apartments

That does not mean every round needs every smoke. It means those are the ones that keep showing up in real Mirage games.

T Side Default Smokes

These are the smokes that help you take space without committing fully.

Window Smoke

This is the Mirage classic. Smoking Window reduces one of the strongest CT vision points and makes top Mid much easier to occupy.

It matters because it:

  • Protects the top Mid cross
  • Reduces AWP pressure
  • Makes Connector and Short pressure safer

If you want to play Mirage seriously, Window is close to mandatory.

Connector Smoke

A Connector smoke is one of the cleanest ways to turn shallow Mid pressure into real control.

It helps:

  • Split A later
  • Block rotator vision
  • Deny fast CT support between Mid and A

Window alone is often not enough. If Window is smoked but Connector still sees everything, CTs remain comfortable.

Short Smoke

Short smokes are useful when you want to stop Cat pressure, isolate a Window player, or make B pressure feel wider than it really is.

This smoke becomes more valuable when:

  • Your team wants B split options
  • You have Underpass presence
  • You want Mid control without overfighting

Short is not always the first smoke players learn, but it rounds out your Mirage Mid package.

T Side A Execute Smokes

These are the smokes that turn a normal A hit into something defenders actually have to respect.

CT Smoke

The CT smoke removes one of the strongest site-crossfire lines and makes post-plant much easier.

It matters because it:

  • Blocks Ticket and spawn support
  • Lets your team cross site with less damage
  • Forces retakers to come through weaker routes

Without CT smoked, many Mirage A hits fail before the bomb is even planted.

Jungle Smoke

Jungle is one of the most important Mirage execute smokes because it cuts the A defense in half.

Good Jungle smokes:

  • Isolate site from Connector
  • Make Palace and Ramp pressure stronger
  • Create cleaner trade paths

It is one of the best examples of utility layering. One smoke changes how every other angle on the site behaves.

Stairs Smoke

Stairs is often the third piece that makes the whole A execute feel real.

Why it matters:

  • Removes a common anchor spot
  • Protects players crossing from Ramp
  • Makes Palace drops easier to trade

CT, Jungle, and Stairs together are the standard Mirage A trio for a reason. They divide attention, remove vision, and simplify the first few duels.

T Side B Execute Smokes

Mirage B takes are much cleaner when they isolate Market instead of just exploding through Apartments.

Market Window Smoke

This is the most important B execute smoke.

It helps:

  • Deny the Market AWPer or rotator
  • Let your entries focus on site fights first
  • Buy time for the plant

Without it, Market becomes a free multi-kill position.

Market Door Smoke

Smoking Market Door keeps the defender rotation slower and makes the post-plant more manageable.

It is especially valuable when:

  • You are hitting B without much Mid pressure
  • The enemy retakes quickly
  • Your team needs a safer plant window

Market Window plus Market Door is the B-site version of creating smaller, more winnable chunks of the round.

Short Smoke

On B hits, Short can matter just as much as the Market smokes because it denies the fast catwalk swing that often breaks the execute.

This is why many solid Mirage B hits are not just "two Market smokes." They also think about the cat rotator.

CT Side Control Smokes

Mirage smokes are not only a T-side topic. CTs win plenty of rounds by smoking early, delaying space, and forcing awkward timings.

Top Mid Smoke

One of the best CT utility habits on Mirage is respecting top Mid early.

A Top Mid smoke can:

  • Slow the default
  • Deny vision for the initial cross
  • Buy time for Window and Connector to settle in

This is especially valuable if your team does not want to hard-fight Mid every round.

A Ramp Smoke

A Ramp smokes buy breathing room and delay fast contact plays.

They are good when:

  • You expect an explosive A hit
  • Your A defender needs time
  • You want to force the T side to either wait or waste utility

Ramp control on Mirage is often about tempo more than kills.

Palace Smoke

Palace smoke is a strong stabilizer when T side keeps using Palace as the second wave of an A hit.

It helps:

  • Cut off late lurk timing
  • Force Palace players into worse drops
  • Reduce the number of angles site players face at once

B Apartments Smoke

On B, smoking Apartments can stop fast pops, force noise, and make timing plays easier to read.

This smoke is especially useful if:

  • Your B anchor is alone
  • The enemy likes quick B hits
  • You want to chain it with a flash or molotov

Retake Smokes

Retake smokes are less flashy than execute smokes, but they save rounds constantly.

Useful Mirage retake ideas include:

  • Smoking A Ramp so post-plant players cannot wide-swing freely
  • Smoking Palace to isolate site players
  • Smoking Apartments exit or site-crossing lanes on B to reduce numbers

The principle is simple: do not retake Mirage by offering every duel at once.

Which Mirage Smokes Should You Learn First?

Do not try to learn everything in one session. Start with the highest-frequency set:

  1. Window
  2. CT
  3. Jungle
  4. Stairs
  5. Market Window
  6. Market Door
  7. Top Mid

That group alone already improves a huge number of Mirage rounds.

Common Mirage Smoke Mistakes

  • Learning lineups with no idea when to use them
  • Throwing Window smoke but never taking real Mid space
  • Executing A with CT smoke only and leaving Jungle or Stairs open
  • Hitting B with Market Window smoked but no answer for Short
  • Using all your smokes too early and having none left for the actual site hit

Good Mirage utility is not about owning a giant lineup library. It is about knowing which smoke unlocks which next decision.

Takeaway

The Mirage smokes you need most are the ones that shape Mid, split A cleanly, and isolate Market on B. Learn the core set first, understand what each one creates, and your Mirage rounds will become more structured immediately.
