CS2 DPI Guide

What DPI means in CS2, how it interacts with sensitivity and eDPI, and how to choose a mouse setup that stays controllable in real matches.

DPI is one of the most misunderstood mouse settings in Counter-Strike. Players talk about 400 DPI, 800 DPI, or 1600 DPI like those numbers alone decide whether a setup is good, but raw DPI means very little without the in-game sensitivity next to it.

What matters is the combination.

What DPI Actually Means

DPI stands for dots per inch. It describes how far the cursor or camera moves for a given physical mouse movement.

Higher DPI means:

  • the mouse reads movement more finely
  • the pointer moves faster at the same in-game sensitivity

But higher DPI alone does not automatically mean "too fast." That depends on your CS2 sensitivity too.


Why eDPI Matters More

In CS2, the more useful comparison is eDPI:

eDPI = DPI × sensitivity

Examples:

These all create roughly the same turn speed.

That is why arguing about DPI by itself misses the point.


Common DPI Choices

The most common practical DPI options are:

  • 400 DPI for players who like larger in-game sensitivity numbers
  • 800 DPI as the most common middle-ground starting point
  • 1600 DPI for players who want smaller in-game sensitivity numbers with the same eDPI

There is no rule saying 400 is "more legit" or 1600 is "too high." The total sensitivity matters more than the label.


A Good Starting Point

For most players, 800 DPI is a clean place to start because it is easy to work with and widely used.

Then pair it with a sensible sensitivity and test whether:

  • you can clear angles without overflicking
  • you can turn comfortably
  • your micro-adjustments still feel stable

If you keep missing because the mouse feels wild, the total sensitivity is probably too high. If you cannot turn or react smoothly, it may be too low.


Low Sens vs High Sens

Lower total sensitivity usually gives:

  • steadier micro-adjustments
  • easier long-range control
  • more reliance on arm movement

Higher total sensitivity usually gives:

  • faster turning
  • less mouse travel
  • more risk of jittery overcorrections

CS2 usually rewards control more than flashy speed, which is why many strong players live in medium-to-low sensitivity ranges.


DPI Does Not Replace Good Mechanics

Changing DPI will not fix:

Mouse settings should support mechanics, not become a distraction from them.
