One-Way Smokes Explained
One-way smokes let you see enemies while staying hidden yourself. Here is how they work, why they are so strong on defence, and how to counter them.
A one-way smoke is a smoke grenade placed so that you can see through or under it in one direction, while enemies on the other side see only a wall of grey. It is one of the most powerful defensive tools in CS2 because it turns a normal choke point into a free-kill angle. Here is how they work and how to beat them.
This builds on grenade types explained and utility layering.
How a One-Way Works
CS2 smokes are volumetric, so where the smoke sits relative to terrain and elevation matters. A one-way happens when the smoke settles just high or low enough that, from your position, you can see the feet or bodies of players walking into it, while from their lower or flatter angle the smoke fully blocks their view of you. You see them; they do not see you.
The most common setups exploit elevation: you hold from higher ground looking down through the base of the smoke, or from an angle where the smoke clips a ledge.
Why They Are So Strong on Defence
One-ways are a defender's dream because they:
- Delay a push - attackers must respect the smoke as normal cover, then get punished for walking through it.
- Create free picks - you fire first with full information, the core of playing for picks.
- Buy time - even if you do not get a kill, you force caution and eat the attackers' clock, which ties into playing the clock.
How to Counter a One-Way
If you suspect a one-way, do not walk through it blind. Options include:
- Re-smoke it - a fresh smoke thrown into the same spot often disrupts the one-way effect.
- Flash through - a flashbang popping on the other side can blind the holder.
- Molotov or nade the likely position - deny the angle rather than challenge it, as with molotovs and incendiaries.
- Wait it out - if you have time, let it fade, though good defenders count on you not having the clock.
Using Them Yourself
Learn one or two reliable one-ways on the maps you defend most. They are highest value on sites and chokes you hold repeatedly, where the same push comes through the same spot. Keep them in your pocket for eco defence and man-disadvantage rounds where a free pick swings everything.
Takeaway
One-way smokes let you see enemies while they see only grey, making them a devastating defensive tool for free picks and stalling pushes. Beat them by re-smoking, flashing, or naded the position rather than walking through blind. Learn a couple on your most-played maps and they will win you rounds outright.
