Tick rate used to be one of the most argued-about numbers in Counter-Strike. In CS2, the conversation changed because Valve introduced subtick architecture, which was meant to make actions register more precisely than older tick-only discussions suggested.

That did not make the topic simpler. It made it more confusing.

What Tick Rate Means

In simple terms, tick rate refers to how often the server updates the game state.

Older Counter-Strike arguments usually sounded like:

  • 64 tick
  • 128 tick

Players used those numbers as shorthand for how responsive and accurate the game felt.


What CS2 Changed

CS2 introduced a subtick system. The important idea is that your actions are not only judged by a coarse update rhythm. The game is meant to record when an action happened more precisely inside that update flow.

That is why Valve talked about moving beyond the old tick-rate framing.

Practical meaning:

  • shots should register closer to the real input moment
  • movement inputs are meant to feel more exact

Even a better server architecture does not erase:

  • packet loss
  • server load
  • frame drops on your own PC
  • bad input feel caused by poor settings

Network feel matters. It is just not the only thing that matters.

The smartest way to think about CS2 tick rate is:
